New Engineering and Welding Academy at Armstrong Works set to shape the next generation of skills for defence, rail and energy
July 15, 2024
A new training centre focused on the development of vocational skills in engineering and welding has been launched by Responsive Engineering, based at Armstrong Works on Scotswood Road. The newly launched centre for education follows successful accreditation of Armstrong Works by engineering and manufacturing skills experts, EAL.
The accreditation, provided to Responsive Engineering on 25th April, will allow Responsive Engineering’s Learning and Development team to deliver standalone qualifications for employees, tailored to the needs of the business. The qualifications, including NVQs, will be delivered by dedicated training staff and supported by the existing workforce to shape the development of their colleagues.
The creation of a dedicated training academy within an engineering business is unusual, with accreditation more often provided to colleges and training providers.
Responsive Engineering’s new status as a training provider compliments its existing in-house Weld Academy which has already seen three welders pass their apprenticeships supported by a dedicated Weld Academy tutor who generously returned to Responsive Engineering following retirement to lend his extensive expertise.
“With our Weld Academy Tutor’s support, the 2nd year welding and plating apprentices at Responsive Engineering have all gained valuable tuition, guidance and instruction to support them in achieving the required welding coding to successfully complete more complex fabrications.” – Learning and Development Manager at Responsive Engineering.
Recruitment at Responsive Engineering continues at pace with a substantial number of apprenticeship roles currently on offer to join the 24 current apprentices at Armstrong Works, plus wide-ranging opportunities for graduates and experienced manufacturers. The roles come as Responsive Engineering continues to grow with substantial orders across defence, rail and energy.
Of note, Responsive Engineering is currently involved in the delivery of work to all of the British Army’s major armoured vehicle programmes in collaboration with parent company, Pearson Engineering, a leading contractor in the defence sector with substantial UK and international orders.
Both companies are currently delivering turret structures, armour packs and mission modules for the next generation of equipment to protect British Armed Forces.
“This is an exceptional achievement for our team and it truly highlights the commitment we have to our people and the future of our workforce. Grassroot roles are so important, not only to provide individuals with opportunities, but also to support our economy and regional prosperity. I’m looking forward to seeing this academy flourish as our business grows.” – Rachel Mansfield, Managing Director at Responsive Engineering.
