Responsive Engineering has been awarded Fit For Nuclear (F4N) status, enhancing its credibility as a supplier to the nuclear sector.

The recognition follows the firm’s appointment by a leading UK construction and civil engineering company to support the building of the steelwork for a temporary jetty in the Bristol Channel as part of EDF Energy’s Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station development.

The temporary jetty will enable 80 per cent of the aggregates needed to build the power station to be delivered by sea, reducing the number of lorries on local roads and minimising the impact on nearby communities.

Based in the state-of-the-art Armstrong Works, on Newcastle’s Scotswood Road, Responsive’s 33,300m2 of manufacturing space offers unique capabilities to customers in a diverse range of sectors.

Managing director, Graeme Cook, sees the accreditation as an additional boost for securing work in the nuclear sector, building on the skills of a workforce that has a wealth of expertise in manufacturing products for some of the world toughest environment including defence, subsea. aerospace and rail.

He said: “This is great news for Responsive and follows on from other key accreditations for new sectors including rail and aerospace as we expand on our expertise in the defence and subsea sectors to explore new markets.

“Whilst gaining the appropriate accreditations was the final step in securing these contracts, it is the fantastic facility in which we operate together with the skills and experience of our team, that enable us to work alongside these major national and international corporations.”

F4N lets companies measure their operations against the standards required to supply the nuclear industry – in new build, operations and decommissioning – and take the necessary steps to close any gaps.

F4N has been developed by the Nuclear AMRC with the support of its top tier partners, including nuclear new build developers and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. These industry leaders are using F4N to identify potential companies for their own supply chains.
